GASTRIC BALLOON SURGERY

The Gastric Balloon procedure is a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure where a soft yet durable balloon is placed in your stomach using an endoscopy and reinforces portion control, helping you eat less and lose weight. This procedure is an option if the patient is overweight and diet and exercise haven’t worked.

  • About

Gastric balloon is a surgery that treats patients with a body mass index greater than 30. The balloon is designed to give the patient a long-lasting feeling of fullness which results in a deceased amount of food intake and lose about 30% of excess weight in 6 months.

  • Procedure

The procedure is a non-surgical weight loss procedure where the patient is lightly sedated and a temporary medical grade balloon is inserted through the mouth using and endoscope and then inflated with a saline solution.

The procedure takes about 20-30 minutes and patients can normally go home after a few hours and are fully recovered after 3 days.

Six hours after the procedure, patients can have small amounts of liquid and will continue a liquid diet for 2 weeks then start to consume soft foods. Around 3 weeks, the patient can start to eat regular food.

The balloon is left in the stomach for up to 6 months and follow a medically supervised diet. After 6 months, the balloon will be removed using another endoscopic procedure.

After the balloon is removed, patients will continue to attend scheduled appointments on a regular basis in which support is provided and answering any questions or concerns that may arise.
